UPdnb Interview
Blame

After performing an amazing set for UP.dnb back in November, Blame talks to our very own Sam Hill (DJ Tru:bass).

  • Hi Blame, thanks for taking the time to answer a few Q’s, I’m sure your a very busy man right now.We have noticed your recent signing to a new record label, could you tell us a little about the label, and what this means for you and your future as a drum and bass producer/dj?

“I have signed an album deal with a label called Newstate. There a very successful label, mainly focusing on dance music, and they really liked what i was doing. What it means for me is that Ill have a great         team behind me to help get
my music out to a much wider audience.”

  • We love your releases, however haven’t heard anything new for a little while, Do you have any big releases lined up, or maybe even an album round the corner?

“I have some really cool projects ready to go, my new single “whispers into screams” will be floating around soon for a release in march, and my album “blame the music” will follow in april/may time.”

  • Have you taken any thought towards collaborations with other artists, and if so, are their any other artists that you would like to work with?

“My whole album is built on some really cool collaborations. Ive got tracks with Tinchy Stryder, soul legend Jocelyn Brown, Dynamite MC, Rodney P, Jenna G, DRS, Tom Sears and loads more. Im all about         collabs right now!”

  • There are various acts in Drum and Bass including pendulum, chase and status, and now even subfocus, who are taking their productions ‘live’. Do you have any plans to do this in the foreseeable future?

“I really want to do that, I just have to figure the best way to approach it because im a 1 man band! Id want to make sure the show would still be exciting/entertaining and not just be a guy with a laptop on stage.”

  • You have been in the game for a long time, and have managed to find the time to DJ, Produce & run your own record label (720 Degrees). Do you have any further plans for the label?

“My main love is making music, and i never really set out to be a label boss, but circumstances forced me have to start a label. I don’t feel like i can offer artists a fair service as a record label because I spend all my time in the studio. So at the moment my main focus is my album, and so the label has taken a back seat.”

  • You came and played for UP.dnb in November 2009, what did you think of the night, and would you like to visit Portsmouth again for a future show?

“I thought it was a really cool night. For a week night there was loads of energy, and a great vibe in there. I hope to be back soon!”

  • What advice would you give to young up and coming DJs / Producers who would love to make the big time?

“I would advise to just make the music that you love/feel, and don’t worry about what other people are doing. You can hear that come through in the music, and it connects with the listeners straight away. Also I would advise artists to stay off internet forums because a lot of it is negativity which you don’t need.”
